With summer finally here, we are so excited to enjoy all those outdoor adventures, but as temperatures increase, so does your chances of heat exhaustion and other heat related illnesses. One of the leading causes for these dangerous conditions? Dehydration. Dehydration, which is a depletion of fluids and/or electrolytes in the body, when coupled with extended exposure to sun or heat, can cause heat exhaustion.
A few signs of dehydration according to the NHS include feeling thirsty, tired, dizzy and having dry mouth, lips and eyes. Additionally, dehydration can cause headaches, a lack of motivation, and more.
To help you stay safe and healthy this summer, we at Glasstic have listed a few of our favorite tips so you can stay hydrated.
Stay away from those sugary drinks.
Although they may seem hydrating at the moment, those sugary drinks are not what your body needs when it’s dehydrated. According to Southcoast Health, about half of adults in the US drink a soda per day. These drinks are also said to be dehydrating, meaning it has the opposite effect than a cup of water. There are also a ton of other reasons why soda shouldn’t be your go-to. It doesn’t have a great nutritional value, it can cause tooth decay, and it can increase your risk of heart disease.
Add fruits to your water for an extra flavor boost.
Some of us find the taste of water bland, it’s just not what we are craving. Try putting some summer fruits like pineapple or watermelon into your Glasstic for a little extra flavor. This will help you drink more water and it’ll give you a refreshing after taste.
Keep a water bottle by your side ALL day long.
Although it may be difficult to juggle carrying a laptop, your cell phone, a purse and a water bottle – there are ways to do this. For example, you can get a shoulder strap for your Glasstic Water Bottle!
Did you know that 80 percent of working Americans don’t drink enough water. The reason? Employees cite many barriers to drinking enough water, including lack of time and having to pay for it. If you keep a Glasstic nearby, you will drink more water and stay hydrated all day long.
Set Reminders. If you are forgetful, like many of us, reminders will help ensure you drink enough water throughout the day.
Set a water intake goal. If you are a goal-getter, setting a goal will help you drink plenty of water throughout the day.
The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine determined that an adequate daily fluid intake is about 3.7 liters of fluids a day for men and 2.7 liters of fluids a day for women. Remember that this amount may fluctuate depending on your adventures for the day.
These are just a few of our favorite ways to stay hydrated. No matter the season, remember to have your Glasstic nearby. Share with us at #GoGlasstic your favorite ways to stay hydrated and healthy all year long.
