May is finally here and for many of us, this is the start of summer break, vacations, travel and warmer weather. We have just worked all winter long to maintain that rockin body in preparation for swimsuit season, but vacations can make it difficult to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Vacation is a time to relax and not worry about the daily stresses of life. For most people, this means overeating eating, relaxing with no work and being a little too lazy.
So how do you make sure you are staying healthy on your next trip? Although the temptations are difficult with all of the foods and relaxation, it’s possible to keep healthy while traveling.
Keep Hydrated – We sometimes forget one of the most important rules of traveling, to stay hydrated. When visiting a foreign country, the last thing you want to do is end up in a hospital with dehydration. This would be expensive and ruin your trip. Those long international trips can cause jet lag and one of the best ways to prevent jet lag, is to stay hydrated. Although there are many health hazards with not keeping hydrated, it also impacts your waistline. When you are dehydrated, many times you confuse thirst for hunger, which makes you eat more and drink less. So grab your Glasstic and drink up.
Keep Exercising – There are so many excuses for not working out on vacation. Although it’s difficult to exercise while on vacation, it’s more difficult to start it up again after traveling. You have worked so hard to get where you are today, just take 30 minutes out of your vacation to take a run. Even if your hotel doesn’t have gym amenities, get out and take a hike, go kayaking, take a few laps around the pool, or run on the beach.
Water is the Best Choice – Although we all want those sugary cocktails, sodas and smoothies, the calories add up. We often don’t think about drinks as a source to weight gain and how these sugary drinks can impact our health. We aren’t telling you to avoid all sugary drinks, but try to limit the numbers to reduce calorie and sugar intake.
Keep on a Normal Sleep Schedule – Sleep plays a critical role in your life and too much or too little sleep can impact your entire day. It makes you less energized and can mess with your mood. Sleeping too much makes you less likely to be active during the day and on average, people who stay up late have a higher calorie intake.
Plan Activities – Make sure to plan activities while on vacation. It may sound relaxing to just lay by the pool and enjoy the sun, but be sure to go out and see something new. You can take a hike, go shopping, visit galleries, or go sightseeing. Greatist suggests visiting local food markets, take a cooking class, and of course, be adventurous.
No matter where your travels take you, be sure to bring your Glasstic water bottle on your next adventure. Staying hydrated and healthy are important goals no matter the season.
