It’s a new year, but is it a new you too? This is the perfect time of year to assess your lifestyle and make healthy and eco-friendly changes that are good for you and good for the environment.
Little eco-friendly things like carrying reusable shopping bags can have a positive impact on the environment and switching from plastic bottles to a shatterproof glass container like Glasstic is better for both your health and the environment. Aside from those, we put together five simple lifestyle changes for you to consider.
1. Up Your Water Intake
The Mayo Clinic suggests you keep track of your water consumption instead of relying on thirst as an index. Thirst is your body’s way of signaling dehydration. In other words, if you’re thirsty, it is too late.
Make water the beverage of choice for each meal and carry your Glasstic with you wherever you go. This means no more unhealthy soda or polluting the earth with plastic bottles. Follow the 8×8 rule – eight glasses with 8 ounces of water each day. In Glasstic terms, that is four containers full.
2. Park It
Each year transportation is responsible for more than half of the toxins in the air. A walk or bicycle ride to the grocery store or coffee shop means you burn body fuel not gas.
When walking or biking is out of the question, check out your local bus routes and ride share options. If exercise is on your list this year, start thinking of ways you can get fit without hitting the gym. When taking the bus, get off a couple stops early and walk the rest of the way.
3. Take Fitness Even Further
You don’t have to stop there. Look for other ways to exercise like taking the stairs instead of the elevator or escalator. Avoid the people movers at the airport and walk to your gate. Instead of walking the dog around the block, walk to the park and use local trails. Your goal should be to increase the amount you walk every day.
4. Go Green
You think we mean green living, right? That is good too, but in this case go green refers to your food choices. If you fill half of every plate up with something green, you are naturally cutting calories and fat. You are also giving your body the nutrients it needs to fight chronic illnesses.
Adding greens to your diet is a great way to improve your health. It doesn’t have to be just lettuce, either.
- Kale
- Collards
- Turnip greens
- Swiss chard
- Spinach
- Broccoli
These are all green foods that are good for you and your family. Focus on the green for a healthy new year.
5. Get Raw
Raw foods are also healthy choice. Raw means higher water content, more fiber and a better supply of micronutrients to fight disease. Keep track of what you eat and set a goal of 50 percent raw food daily. Raw food diets may include (but are not limited to) a selection of fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds.
There you have it. Eco-friendly and healthy lifestyle changes of any size are good for you, your family and the world in general – hard to go wrong there.
